As Mother’s Day approaches, we remember all that our mom may have done for us.
We can help take care of her as she ages. We can make her life more comfortable as she ages and possibly loses some physical abilities or mental capabilities.
Make sure that you have legal authority to help her as she needs medical care by having Healthcare Powers in place that cross state lines. Make sure there are HIPPA authorities in place so that you and other loved ones can have access to medical information.
You will want to have legal authority in place to help handle her affairs if she declines mentally. We have had to do this with my mom as she has declined mentally. A good way to do this is through a Trust or Living Trust with Mental Disability Planning designed in the Trust. You cannot do that with a Will.
Financial Power of Attorneys are helpful also.
Remember to honor your mom this Sunday, which is Mother’s Day, and remember all that she did for you.
