A few years ago I was visiting a friend in a major city and attended a large formal church. As I followed my friends down the aisle there was an elderly gentleman sitting alone looking forlornly at the floor on the end of the pew. I put my hand on his shoulder, smiled and asked “How are you today?” He looked up and literally glowed. He had a huge smile and warmth radiated from his whole countenance. He told me “Very well now.” Later I wondered how long it had been since another human being had touched him and asked how he was doing.
Christmas and Thanksgiving are very lonely times for many people. The Hallmark Channel and “It’s a Wonderful Life” images of loving family and friends can make many who feel they don’t have any family or friends very lonely.
As we head toward Christmas Day don’t forget to look around and see who you might “touch” in a human way either by physical touch, or by looking into their eyes and asking them how “they” are doing. A friendly phone call is great too.
