Harper Lee passed on in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama at age 89. She was still of sharp wit and close with her friends. She was known to be a very private person.
To Kill a Mockingbird is an important book in so many ways. The primary character “Atticus Finch” was a small town lawyer in the deep South in the 1920s. In a humble way with high moral character he taught his children how to champion causes for minorities, the mentally handicapped, the poor and the elderly. The book was so well written that the moral lessons are woven seamlessly into the story.
As the main character Atticus Finch was pushing against the morays of society in helping these outcast groups, there was public push back. In the story he showed great character, poise and a strong desire to “do the right thing”, even at a cost to himself.
For many young men raised in the South, Atticus Finch was a reason many ended up being lawyers. I was one of them. I want to protect my clients, their families and “do the right thing” as Atticus Finch did. To Kill a Mockingbird is a big reason I ended up being a lawyer.
Harper Lee will be remembered fondly as To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic that calls each of us to “do the right thing.”
