Forbes magazine lists the second most important thing to do in 2012 is to get your Estate Plan properly done. The only item listed ahead of it was “set your goals.” This is from their “12 Financial Resolutions for 2012.”
We are six times more likely to become mentally disabled in a given year than to pass on. You can and should plan for what happens to you and your loved ones if you do become mentally disabled. We are going to pass on and we never know when—so we need to have good Estate Planning in place for that also.
The old saying is, “If you don’t have an Estate Plan, the government has one for you.” It is true, your estate will move by state laws, not your desires, if you don’t have a proper Estate Plan in place that plans for you if you are alive and well, takes care of you and your loved ones if you become mentally disabled, and leaves what you have to whom you want, when you want, and how you want at the lowest overall cost to you and those you love.
So start into those resolutions and get proper Estate Planning done!
