Beautiful colorful leaves are still hanging on many trees. Days and nights are cooler. It has been raining here in Western North Carolina. The lights of the day are shorter. Even on the clock, we have “fallen back” one hour. Fall is definitely here.
The long warm days of summer with the bright green leaves on the trees and more outside play in the mountains makes many of us feel young. The changing of colors, shorter days with damper, cooler weather reminds many of us that the year is closing toward its end. In addition, it reminds many of us that more than half of our days are gone. That thought brings us back to the reality of the fragility and brevity of life. It reminds us to love and enjoy each day.
One of the interesting things about cancer survivors are many seem very focused on living in the moment and enjoying every part of “that day”. Focusing on what is in front of them, and not worrying whether it is “good or bad”, but just enjoying experiencing that “moment”.
For our loved one we need to “check in” and tell them the joy that they have added to our lives. We also need to set things up so that they can help us when we need help. One of the best things we can do to help them is to make sure that they have legal authority to take care of us if we are sick and to deal with our affairs when we pass on.
