Recently a small private airplane owned and flown by a middle-aged Asheville man, along with his two adult sons and one of the son’s fiancé, crashed killing all of them. They crashed on the edge of the busy Interstate I-285 on the north side of Atlanta. They had just lifted off from a small private airport just north of the very broad and busy I-285 and I-85 intersections on the northeast side of Atlanta. There was some difficulty with the take-off and there was nowhere to land. They were directly over busy and very crowded interstates and commercial and residential areas. There were no fields or uninhabited roads to try to set the plane down.
My oldest son, who lives in Atlanta, was driving just south of that intersection on I-85 heading north when the plane crashed. My son said that if the plane had been a few feet higher and had cleared the concrete wall separating lanes on the interstates, the plane would have hit and probably killed dozens of people on a very crowded and very fast moving I-85 interstate. Possibly the last heroic act of the pilot was limiting the catastrophe to the loss of those in the airplane itself.
They were a well-known family and well-liked individuals. I had met the pilot several times and he seemed like a genuinely nice man. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the family members and loved ones struck by this tragedy.
As my mother with dementia says, “Life is challenging”.
