The recent sleet and snow covering Western North Carolina in ice and snow reminds us of our powerlessness against storms. Whether weather storms or unexpected times in life. Recently my friend returned from a trip out of town to find her father jaundiced in color. Upon taking him to the hospital she learned he has cancer and just days to live.
The family has been in chaos trying to deal with dad’s health care, hospice situation, and scrambling looking for his legal documents of Healthcare Powers, Powers of Attorney and knowing they will need to find the Trust or Will dad had prepared (If there is one).
During all of this scrambling, they have had to also take care of their elderly mom who has dementia.
Fortunately, for my friend and her brother, they were able to find the legal Estate Planning work that their dad had properly done. These are the situations adult children are finding themselves in. Suddenly their “in control” parent is “out of control” and the adult child has to take action.
If you are the adult child, have you had that tough conversation with your parents to make sure they have done proper Estate Planning? Does that proper Estate Planning control what they own, is it current with the law, does it have the right people in the right place, and does it carry out their intentions?
If you are the parent or adult and haven’t done this necessary legal work, find a qualified Estate Planning attorney and have it done.
Others are counting on you to “help them to help you.”
At the Law Firm of Steven Andrew Jackson, Attorney and Counsellor at Law, we have helped hundreds of families protect themselves and their loved ones, avoid Estate Taxes and Probate Costs, and keep their Estate Plans current with the law through The Customized Protective Estate Planning Solution™.
